In a move that underscores shifting labor dynamics in the Southern gaming market, employees at Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica, Mississippi, have voted to join Teamsters Local 667. The decision, reached through a card-check majority, brings roughly 280 workers, including housekeepers, food and beverage staff, and cocktail servers, under union representation.

For many employees, the choice was driven by everyday concerns rather than abstract labor ideals. Workers cited the need for higher wages, improved benefits, and more predictable working conditions as central motivations. One employee described the change as empowering, reflecting a broader sentiment among staff that their collective voices carried more weight than their individual ones.

The Memphis-based Teamsters Local 667, part of a labor organization representing over a million workers across North America, has welcomed the new members as part of a growing footprint in the casino sector. The development is not occurring in isolation. It follows similar organizing efforts at other casinos across the country, signaling a renewed focus on labor rights in the hospitality and gaming industries.

How Unionization Affects Local Casinos

The unionization at Gold Strike Casino Resort may have ripple effects beyond a single property. For workers, union membership often translates into stronger negotiating power, structured grievance processes, and the possibility of improved compensation packages.

For casino operators, however, the implications are more complex. Increased labor organization can lead to higher operating costs, particularly if collective bargaining results in wage increases or expanded benefits. At the same time, it can also bring stability, reduce turnover, and foster a more experienced workforce, thereby enhancing customer service.

In regions like Tunica, where casinos are a cornerstone of the local economy, these changes carry added weight. The industry supports a wide range of jobs beyond gaming floors, from hospitality to maintenance. Unionization can therefore influence not only individual workplaces but also the broader economic ecosystem.

Ultimately, the Gold Strike decision reflects more than a workplace shift; it highlights an evolving conversation about the future of casino employment, the role of digital gambling, and the balance between innovation and job preservation.

Tunica Online Casinos To The Rescue

While Tunica has long been recognized as a hub for land-based gaming in Mississippi, the digital gambling landscape tells a different story. Unlike some states that have embraced online casinos, Mississippi remains cautious about expanding into iGaming.

This hesitation has created an opportunity for offshore online casinos, which continue to attract players seeking convenience and a broader game selection. These platforms, like the casino sites at TunicaOnlineCasinos.com, operate outside U.S. jurisdiction, filling a demand that local operators cannot legally meet.

Industry observers note that the absence of regulated online casino options in Mississippi has indirectly supported offshore operators. At the same time, lawmakers have shown little urgency to change course. Efforts to expand mobile betting or legalize online casino play have repeatedly stalled, reflecting concerns about economic disruption and workforce implications.

For Tunica’s brick-and-mortar casinos, this dynamic creates a delicate balance. On one hand, offshore sites compete for players’ attention. On the other hand, local casinos remain vital employers in the region, providing thousands of jobs tied directly to in-person gaming experiences.

The result is a dual-track gambling environment: one rooted in physical resorts and hotels along the Mississippi River, and another operating quietly online beyond regulatory reach.

At its peak in the early 2000s, Tunica ranked among the nation’s largest gambling destinations. But in recent years, the market has steadily declined. The latest blow came with the closure of Sam’s Town Casino, a fixture since 1994, which shut its doors in November 2025 after decades of dwindling demand.

Industry analysts argue that the rise of online gambling and sports betting from offshore and neighboring states has siphoned customers away from traditional casinos, reshaping entertainment preferences and eroding Tunica’s competitive edge.

Tunica Gambling Laws and Market Pressures

Mississippi legalized casino gambling in 1990, allowing riverboat-style casinos along the Mississippi River and the Gulf Coast. Tunica quickly became a hub, with Harrah’s, Sam’s Town, and other major operators anchoring the market. However, the state has been slow to embrace online gambling.

While sports betting was legalized in 2018, the law requires wagers to be placed in person at licensed Tunica casino resorts and hotels. Domestic mobile betting remains prohibited, leaving residents without state-regulated online options within state borders. This regulatory gap has left Tunica casinos vulnerable.

Neighboring states like Arkansas and Tennessee have adopted more flexible online betting laws, drawing away customers who once traveled to Tunica. Combined with economic downturns and natural disasters, like the 2011 floods, the region’s casino industry has struggled to recover.

Offshore Casinos and Online Competition

Despite Mississippi’s restrictions, online gambling is thriving through offshore operators. These platforms, often based in internationally recognized gaming jurisdictions, market themselves to Mississippi players, offering casino games and sports betting accessible from home. While technically outside U.S. regulation, they remain popular among gamblers seeking convenience and mobile access.

Boyd Gaming, which owned Sam’s Town, cited “two decades of falling market demand” when announcing the closure. With only five casinos now operating in Tunica, the question looms: can the region survive without embracing digital gambling?

Unless Mississippi lawmakers revisit online betting laws, Tunica’s casino industry may continue to shrink, leaving only offshore Tunica online casinos to fill the void.
The post Is Online Gambling The Reason Tunica Casinos Are Closing first appeared on Tunica Online Casinos.

The casino will cease operations on November 9, 2025, at 10 p.m., while the hotel will remain open until November 2 to accommodate final guests and staff transitions.

The closure marks a significant moment in the history of Tunica’s gaming industry, which once boasted over ten casinos and ranked among the top gambling destinations in the United States outside Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

Sam’s Town, which opened in 1994 and was the largest of Boyd Gaming’s properties in the region, has been a cornerstone of Tunica’s entertainment landscape since its launch.

Why It’s Closing

According to Boyd Gaming, the decision was driven by long-term economic challenges and a steady decline in market demand across northwest Mississippi.

In a public statement, the company acknowledged that the move was difficult but necessary, citing the closure of several neighboring casinos since 2014 and increased competition from nearby states such as Arkansas, where expanded gambling laws have reshaped visitor traffic to Tunica.

David Strow, Vice President of Corporate Communications for Boyd Gaming, emphasized that the company had made extensive efforts to adapt to changing conditions but ultimately could not overcome the downturn.
Strow said, “Our decision to close Sam’s Town is a result of these market conditions and follows our best efforts to adjust the business to address lower demand.”

Online Casino Gambling Continues To Grow In Mississippi

Despite changes in the local gambling landscape, online Tunica casinos remain accessible through licensed and regulated offshore sites. Online gambling sites have been servicing the state of Mississippi since the early 2000s and have become the most trusted source for many players.

Online casinos are not allowed to operate within the state’s lines according to local gambling laws. However, popular games such as online slots, blackjack, baccarat, and video poker are widely available online.

What’s Next For The Sam’s Town Casino Property?

The property will not be repurposed as a new casino, nor will operations be relocated elsewhere in Mississippi. This leaves Tunica with just five remaining casinos, a stark contrast to its heyday in the mid-1990s.
The post Sam’s Town Casino in Tunica to Close After 31 Years first appeared on Tunica Online Casinos.

Once hailed as the “South’s Casino Capital,” Tunica, Mississippi, is navigating a pivotal moment in its storied history with gambling. While the small town was once among the top three gaming destinations in the U.S., today, it faces economic and social shifts that have led to both challenges and reinvention. In response, local casinos and officials are investing in modernization efforts aimed at revitalizing the area as they strive to attract a new generation of gamblers and entertainment-seekers.

In the 1990s, Tunica became a beacon for those looking to strike it big. Mississippi’s legalization of gambling turned Tunica from one of the poorest counties in the nation into an economic hub, with revenue from gambling funding schools, infrastructure, and creating thousands of jobs. But in recent years, new competitors have emerged, particularly in the form of online gambling and sports betting, which have shifted the industry away from traditional brick-and-mortar casinos.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated these challenges. Tunica casinos, like many across the U.S., were forced to close temporarily in 2020, losing millions of dollars. Even as they reopened, foot traffic struggled to return to pre-pandemic levels. In response, officials have shifted their focus, investing in transforming the area into a comprehensive entertainment destination rather than one reliant solely on casino revenue.

“There’s a renewed focus here on modernizing the gaming experience,” said Carla Adams, spokesperson for the Tunica Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Tunica has a rich history in gaming, and we believe that a blend of the traditional and the new will help keep it vibrant. We’re not only about gaming anymore; we’re about entertainment and tourism.”

Some casinos have embraced digital advancements, bringing sports betting to the area with sleek sports lounges and partnerships with popular mobile betting apps. They are also upgrading their facilities, adding upscale dining, live music venues, and even virtual gaming experiences that appeal to younger crowds.

For locals, this is a much-needed breath of fresh air. Community leader John Thompson commented, “We’re hopeful that these changes bring in more jobs and put us back on the map. This area has been through highs and lows, but there’s a resilient spirit here.”

Despite the optimism, some challenges remain. The global gambling industry is shifting rapidly towards online platforms, which offer players the convenience of betting from home. To stay competitive, Tunica casinos will need to continuously innovate and perhaps even build an online gambling presence. Experts suggest that a stronger push into digital gaming, such as integrating augmented reality or interactive games within the casino, could help bridge this gap.

Tunica’s modernization efforts are already attracting attention. The area has reported a slight increase in visitors over the past year, particularly due to new sports betting options and live entertainment events. This upswing, while small, signals a promising start for Tunica’s future.

Only time will tell if Tunica’s gamble on innovation and expanded entertainment will restore its glory days. For now, the small Mississippi town is embracing the challenge, rolling the dice on a future where tradition meets transformation.
The post Tunica, Mississippi: A Gamble on the Future as Casinos Aim for a Comeback first appeared on Tunica Online Casinos.

Tunica Resorts casinos have had a rough go of things so far in 2023.

There was an armed robbery at one venue, there was another armed robbery at another venue, a tornado threatened operations of several other sites, a major wind farm is getting built in the community, and — as a potential nail in the coffin — the Horseshoe Casino is opening a new Guy Fieri restaurant. Nothing says economic downturn like Guy Fieri’s Tunica Kitchen + Bar.

Of course, we’re kidding. At least about that last thing. Maybe.

However, it’s clear that the area is struggling. While the casinos in Tunica are doing okay comparatively, they don’t seem to be enough to keep the broader county afloat. Residents are fleeing the area, and the median income in Tunica County is just over $41,000. Approximately one quarter of the local population lives under the poverty line.

That’s why the wind farm, developed by AES with heavy investment from Amazon, is coming to the region. In addition to electricity, the wind farm is supposed to generate up to $60 million in tax revenue for Tunica County “over the life of the project.”

Now, that doesn’t seem like a whole lot, to be honest. And frankly, it isn’t.

Tunica city planners claim the money will go toward education primarily, but the reality is that even for a badly impoverished area, a few million dollars a year “for education” isn’t going to amount to much. And the tradeoff is a giant, ugly, loud, desolate wind farm. We just hope the Tunica casino hotels are both out of earshot and eyeshot of these things.

If Tunica County is really interested in a tax windfall to shore things up along the river, they’d be better served making a coalition with their counterparts in Biloxi and petitioning the state to allow mobile online casino gambling.

The taxes from statewide mobile gambling in Mississippi would be substantially higher than whatever pittance the AES wind farm is on track to generate, and it would be trivial to allot a meaningful percentage of that to the communities in which the operators actually have facilities.

But naturally, the wind farm is an easier sell, and it’s not a this-or-that situation. It can be both, and the wind farm has the benefit of not requiring state approval and legislative action. Because even though online MS casinos make all the sense in the world from a domestic operator perspective, the reality is that the state’s been dragging its feet on the inevitability.

And it is inevitable.

Most of the country’s biggest casino markets already allow online casino gambling. Pennsylvania allows it, New Jersey allows it, Michigan allows it. And in all those states, tax revenues have shown that iGaming is a winner.

During the COVID shutdowns, Atlantic City kept the lights on in the casino district on the strength of their iGaming revenues while Las Vegas saw a 95% decline in year-over-year income. Many Vegas casinos — particularly older venues not back by the deep pockets of big brands — shut down permanently.

Had similar troubles happened in AC, AC might be no more. But iGaming saved the industry there, and it could save the community here in Tunica.

Ironically, the market that saw the most damage during COVID — Las Vegas — is probably the only USA casino market that wouldn’t actually profit from legal online casino games.

Thanks to its reputation as the global gambling destination and the fact that casinos are only a part of how huge Vegas resorts make their money, Vegas can rely on foot traffic from locals and visitors to make all the money they need to make. They can weather a bad year without risking the 5-10% market cannibalization that online gambling generally brings to associated brick-and-mortar facilities.

Vegas isn’t just a gambling destination, in other words. It’s built on gambling, but there’s a lot more at play.

In a place like Tunica (or Biloxi, for that matter), the economic realities of the surrounding communities are such that iGaming would be a major net positive for everyone involved.

Truth be told, the only thing stopping Mississippi from legalizing state-wide iGaming is politics.

The state’s conservative government likes to pretend that keeping gambling off the Internet (which it can’t do anyway, since offshore/international online casinos are legal to access by MS residents) means they’re “protecting” the state’s youth from some bogeyman vice.

Of course, modern technology and industry-standard operations already use geofencing and age verification to guarantee that underage gamblers are disallowed, so it’s kind of a moot point.

Eventually, they’ll figure it out.

As Gulf Coast casinos in and around Biloxi set an annual revenue record with $1.6 billion and Tunica casinos pulled in nearly $$700 million in 2021, Mississippi unmasked a total gambling haul of nearly $2.7 billion in earnings statewide.

Notably, this is without Mississippi mobile sports betting.

Of course, despite the above figures – which bode exceptionally well for the market in the wake of downturns throughout 2020 due to COVID-related casino closures – all that talk in town remains on the aforesaid mobile sports betting.

Many industry analysts thought that 2021 would be the year that MS got over the hump and finally legalized domestic online sportsbooks, particularly in light of COVID’s impact on the state’s gambling products.

That didn’t happen.

So as neighboring states began to legalize mobile domestic sportsbooks and reaped the obvious rewards of doing so, 2022 became the logical conclusion.

But while Mississippi doesn’t have to contend with any of the tribal exclusivity issues that have harried many other states’ plans to implement online sports betting, there’s no real hurry among MS lawmakers to approve mobile betting, after all.

In fact, at least five Mississippi casinos are vocally against online sports betting, and their argument is easy to understand.

Current MS gambling law mandates that all patrons must be physically within licensed casino property to place sports wagers. This, obviously, gets people onto the gambling floors where they can “parlay” their sports betting winnings into big casino losses.

Such is, after all, the main allure of the casino sportsbook from a business perspective, as casinos themselves don’t make all that much money off hosting sports betting services.

So, if MS residents are simply allowed to bet sports online – especially without having access to online slots, online blackjack, online roulette, and other casino table games – there’s not a great deal of financial incentive for these operators to go all in on mobile sportsbooks.

As a result, all five of this year’s Mississippi mobile sports betting bills died in committee on Tuesday.

Which is actually kind of fitting.

You see, sports bettors worldwide suffered a massive blow on Tuesday with the retirement of Tom Brady, who leaves the NFL – and its millions of online sports betting enthusiasts – at a serious crossroads.

The free ride is over.

For 22 years, Brady was a stone cold lock on the boards every Sunday, winning 10 conference championships and seven Super Bowls. For serious futures bettors, Brady was literal early retirement.

Now, they’ll need to find another meal ticket. We’ll need to find another meal ticket.

Nevertheless, Mississippi’s collusion with Tom Terrific won’t stop us – or you – from betting on Super Bowl 56 and other football fare, even if our only legal option to do so remains the offshore Tunica casino sportsbooks we recommend.

And here’s to better bettor things in 2023!

The Tunica County casinos used to be one of the only locations for gambling and legal sports betting since the early 1990s. Tunica was the South’s premier gambling location, with over eleven casinos in the county alone.

But since then, other states have begun legalizing gambling and sports betting within their jurisdictions, causing competition and a handful of Tunica brick-and-mortar casinos to shut down. Last June, the Resorts Casino Tunica closed its doors, making it the third casino to do so since 2014.

Only six casinos remain in Tunica, including Resorts Casino Tunica neighbor Hollywood Casino Tunica. Tunica County legalized gambling in 1992, peaking in 2001 with 13,000 jobs and high revenues. Revenues have fallen since 2006, and the casino now employs around 5,000 workers.

With neighboring states like Arkansas and Tennessee opening gambling restrictions, the scene does not look good for Tunica’s future. Memphis has continued to grow in popularity for gambling, and a 2019 Arkansas referendum approved four full-fledged casinos.

Moreover, Tennessee upped the competition with their new online regulated sports betting market, enjoying operators with big names like BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Tennessee Action 24/7. The first week of business brought in over $27 million in wagered capital.

The coronavirus added another stressor to the Tunica domestic gambling industry. After statewide lockdowns lifted, casinos were hopeful of returning to normalcy after seeing traffic beginning to trickle in.

But job market reports show that Tunica is still struggling to recover from the pandemic, with a 13.8 percent unemployment rate. President and CEO of the Tunica Convention and Visitors Bureau spoke on the issue.

“The gaming commission came out with the fact that we have to run at the 50 percent occupancy, but the numbers are strong, and we are lucky that NFL and College Football is all going. Sports betting is something that people are coming down for,” Franklin said.

When asked on the return of live shows and entertainment, Franklin said, “You can gamble anywhere in America today, it’s not like it was when we first started in the ’90s, and what separates you as a destination is the entertainment that we have here.”

But anyone who keeps up with us knows that one of the best options for Mississippians to gamble is using one of our recommended online Tunica casinos. These casinos operate internationally, so you do not have to worry about domestic restrictions, shutdowns, or the coronavirus. Our online Tunica casinos are industry-leading reputable gambling destinations.

The bets started to roll in at the Horseshoe Casino and Hotel in Tunica, Mississippi as the back and forth battle between the two southpaws started to turn heads. A Brooklyner and former World Champion, Luis Callazo took on welterweight contender, Sammy Vasquez Jr in the main event of Premier Boxing Championships on FS1 and FOX Deportes. The Horseshoe Casino is one of the remaining casino properties in the region, and did a wonderful job hosting the event. Despite a rough economic situation existing in Tunica, the event was well attended. Tunica online casinos are becoming more popular as some of the region’s most beloved brick and mortar casinos have closed their doors.

Both of the fighters were coming off a loss but Collazo was the more experienced fighter in the ring that night, sporting a 36-7 record. Collazo won the WBA welterweight title in 2006 with a split decision win over Jose Antonio Rivera which thrust him into discussion with the biggest names in the sport. He went on to have fights with guys like Ricky Hatton, Shane Mosely, and Andre Berto. Despite the unfortunate consequence of coming up short in headline bouts against big names, he kept pushing and eventually got another shot at the next level. In January of 2014, he had the chance to fight Victor Ortiz for the WBA international welterweight title. Victor Ortiz was at the top of the sport and was the heavy favorite. Luis Collazo knocked Ortiz out with a sharp lead right hook as both fighters raced to throw the same punch when Collazo’s hook landed first.

It was the same punch that ended the night early for Vasquez, “Going into the fight I knew he didn’t like the body shots. In the locker room my team was telling me that he’s going to be waiting for it. We wanted to touch him soft down low and then go up top. We opened him up. We both tried to line up the hook and mine landed first,” said Collazo. After the bout, Collazo dropped to his knees and prayed as his opponent struggled to regain consciousness in the middle of the ring in Tunica, Mississippi.

Vasquez, an 8-year army veteran who served two tours in Iraq, had no problems admitting defeat, “I felt like I was starting to get in my groove. He just caught me with a really great shot at the right time. I knew his big punch was the right hook. I was working on keeping my hand up to block it. I dropped it at the wrong time and he got me. Obviously, this is going to set me back. I need to come back stronger. I hope that I can come back and fight someone that can help me move up the ranks.”

It was a little more than six months before this bout where Vasquez suffered his first defeat as a professional and despite the loss, was highly regarded coming into this bout with Collazo. While Vasquez is looking to take some time off and regroup Collazo is ready to fight again immediately. In the post-fight interview Collazo was asked about his next bout to which he responded, “There are a lot of great fights coming up in the welterweight division. I know Shawn Porter doesn’t have an opponent right now. I’m ready to get it on if he is.”

Collazo recently found out that Shawn Porter is the mix with setting up a fight with Andre Berto, so you can bet that he’s paying attention to the winner of that fight for his next bout.

How Casino Gambling Took an Impoverished Region from Rags to Riches

There are always going to be those who oppose the gambling industry in general, labeling it as an evil in the world that just leads to negative consequences for any area that embraces it. While gambling opponents claim that integrating gambling into a community brings with it crime and mayhem, Tunica is an example of how gambling saved a town from financially withering away. Until the early 1990’s, Tunica, Mississippi was actually one of the poorest regions in the United States. The residents were living in poverty, they endured open sewers and some of the county didn’t even have running water. The Sheriff’s department only had 9 employees total to provide law enforcement to the entire county, and the region’s public schools and other public buildings, as well as their roads were in disrepair. There was no good news to be had really. That is until gambling found its way to the region.

The first casino was opened in Tunica in the fall of 1992. Business boomed and within weeks the casino had more players and visitors than they could handle, resulting in lines out the door. In fact, the casino was charging an admission fee just to get in and visitors were gladly paying it. It is safe to say that gambling was an overnight sensation in Tunica. The casino industry has since grown into the third largest gambling region in the US, servicing close to 15 million visitors per year. Within a short time of the establishment of brick and mortar casinos in Tunica, the influx of revenue began positively impacting the area. In addition to the extensive job creation facilitated by the casinos themselves, business that were previously struggling and barely making it began to grow and expand, offering the people in the area more jobs as well. The financial boost in revenue was something that dramatically enhanced the quality of life for all Tunica county residents.

The region was able to make significant improvements which were desperately needed. Starting with road improvements and repairs made to the public schools, they were also able to improve the sewer system and provide running water throughout the county. They were able to increase the annual budget to their Sheriff’s department and increase their law enforcement staff from only 9 members to over 200. This was only the beginning of a new life being breathed into Tunica County and its residents. Next on the list of enhancements to the area came a stadium, an airport expansion to handle the influx of travelers to the gambling Mecca, an expo center, and most impressively, an eco park that cost them in excess of $20 million. That is a far cry from being the poorest spot in the US. Smaller businesses which were located in close proximity to the new casinos also experienced a boost in business, from restaurants to fitness centers and even the county museum.

Tunica is like the little engine that could, and when they finally reached their destination, they reaped the rewards by improving the lives of the people who had stayed and try to make it for so long in an impoverished area with little hope. What little hope they had, they turned into something big. So for all you gambling naysayers out there, perhaps you should be a little more open minded when discussing the prospects of gambling, both in brick and mortar locations and online gambling sites. Red blooded American adults are able to enjoy responsible and safe gambling entertainment without inviting crime bosses or criminals to the party. The cause and effect correlation of gambling to crime really has no solid ground anymore as evidenced by the good people of Tunica and the people who love to be a part of this rags to riches story.

Will Tunica online casino gambling take them even further up the riches ladder? Time will tell as the online industry is still in it’s infancy stage and states are still working out all the details with how to operate within the confines of the law.
The post Tunica Rags To Riches Story first appeared on Tunica Online Casinos.

The town of Tunica still faces devastating poverty and unemployment levels.

Tunica, Mississippi has been described as “America’s Ethiopia,” criticized on national news for its seeming “apartheid” school system and ranked as one of the nation’s poorest counties. Despite managing to strike deals with big-name casinos and all of the upscale businesses that come in alongside them, Tunica is still struggling with horrific levels of poverty and a lack of opportunity for a majority of its residents. In fact, a recent study on upward mobility found that a poor child in Tunica’s chances of moving up the socioeconomic ladder were lower than all but six other counties across the entire United States.

In the early 1990s, Tunica received the golden ticket out of the endless cycle of poverty and unemployment: an opportunity to become a shining, neon-lit casino destination. Since the advent of riverfront casino properties, upscale golf courses and posh restaurants, the county of Tunica has made over $760 million, which is absolutely unheard of for a place with only 10,000 people.

While this might seem like an uplifting, underdog story about a small town striking it rich, there is a dark and depressing side to this story.

From Boom to Bust

Despite the rare opportunity afforded to the town, very few of its residents received any benefits from Tunica’s sudden prosperity. Though there is disagreement as far as where Tunica failed its general population, the biggest issue seems to be what is considered a gross mismanagement of funds.

Rather than investing in the long-term security of the entire town, the county’s officials chose to take the majority of casino revenues and pour them into lavish wedding halls, a golf course designed by a PGA Tour pro, an Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool and luxury tourist accommodations. Many believe that the casino revenues should have been equitably divided between promoting tourism and investing in funding for skills training, proper education and basic welfare programs to help pull the county out of the entrenched poverty it has been a victim of for so many decades.

A Success Story for Certain Social Circles

Linda Fay Engle-Harris, an elderly former teacher, has been very vocal about the issues in her hometown. She is just one of the many struggling residents and has always tried to manage her dire situation on her own. She was thrilled at the prospect of the county prospering because she thought it would mean better jobs, improved standards of living and a general uplifting of the area. However, after nearly three decades, the majority of Tunica has been left in a precarious economic situation.

Only 2.5 percent of the hundreds of millions in gambling profits was actually used for things like home renovations and other social programs to help the poor. The remainder was squandered on trying to boost the tourism for the area. Unfortunately, Tunica officials did not count on their era of prosperity being so short-lived. Once competing casino moved in and the economy took a downward turn, Tunica’s carefully crafted casino scene began to crumble.

“We Tend to Forget How Far We’ve Come”

Webster Franklin, who is the president and CEO of the Tunica Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that when asked about Tunica’s current situation. “In 1990, you couldn’t buy shoes in Tunica. There weren’t safe roads to travel on,” he says. While this may be true, and while the 30 percent poverty rate may look great compared to the pre-casino days of 56 percent, Tunica is still on par with the poorest, most troubled places in the nation.

The officials and residents who benefitted from Tunica’s brief stint of gambling prosperity may be able to say that the money was used with “good intentions,” but that doesn’t help the people in Tunica whose homes are still crumbling around them. One has to think that if online gambling were legalized in Mississippi, Tunica online casinos would help the city to prosper.
